I am looking mainly for songs that i can learn and cover so that i can use the skills to create my own music. what would be best to learn for a beginner to intermediate level? i have only been playing for a year and a half.

Man, just look around.
There are so many guitar videos with covered songs, so many instructional videos, online teachers, ready tabs and chords...
Really these days we have tons of stuff useful when learning guitar playing.
I can only regret it was not same when I was young...

I think learning the blues is a good start and sinple riffs like hoochie coochie man or boom boom are good starts as you can take them anywhere and expand all the time
But really find a song you like and learn it, rthen play around with it, good look
